Treatment Planning Made Easy: A Workbook for Mental Health Professionals

Treatment plans establish that the proposed treatment meets the needs of the client. Additionally, they also serve as an assessment tool indicating whether the client is benefiting from treatment, that the goals of treatment were completed, and that the client is ready to terminate. When used effectively, treatment plans protect clinicians should a legal action arise. Such action can and do arise when client perceive or suffer an actual injury. Treatment plans protect clinicians by demonstrating and documenting how the clinician assessed the client appropriately to reach a diagnosis. From the diagnosis, the clinician developed a treatment plan. Finally, the clinician used the treatment plan effectively to assess the client's progress.

This thoroughness in documentation helps clinicians avoid being labeled as incompetent or practicing below the standards of the profession. Opposing attorneys dislike this degree of documentation. This format helps protect the clinician in case a legal action arises.

This workbook provides a step-by-step approach allowing clinicians to develop and create treatment plans rapidly and easily. This book uses a variety of theoretical models to illustrate the use of goals, objectives, and interventions in the 4 phases of treatment. Each of the following phases is an important part of the overall treatment. The book addresses how to document goals, objectives, and interventions for each of the following phases: Crisis, Beginning, Middle, and Ending Phases. This workbook is a must for any clinicians interested in elevating his/her practice to the standard of care and to develop a self protective foundation should he/she face legal action.
